OUGD501 FINAL OUTCOME

Here is my final outcome for this brief. I have combined both digital and printing methods onto a multi format piece of design, celebrating these two principles within one. During the final stages of my development, I deeply considered some key things to improve the final outcome itself. For instance, I have chosen a thick 120gsm paper stock which is slightly coated to give the print as much detail as possible when it has been produced. Having simple things like this altered gives the physical print more aesthetic value and makes it really feel like its worth something. This consideration will convince the audience to hold onto the flyer for some time.

By using the app Artivive, the audience will see the detailed flyer come to life with an engaging animation advertising the event to its full potential. A strong use of typography has been animated to emphasise certain parts of the flyer, guiding the audience through it. Finally, a short sample of the artists music has been included also so that when the flyer is animating, the audience gets a short sample of what the event has to offer playing through their phones. This way, an equal amount of consideration has been taken into both digital and print aspects of the design.

Downloading the free Artivive app is the best way to experience the flyer at its full potential. This also includes sound which I am unable to demonstrate on the blog.

OUGD501 ARTIVIVE DEVELOPMENT

I began creating developing a simple gif for my chosen event, which was in this case a UK tour for the jazz group Nubya Garcia. Using a strong use of typography, I emphasised the main title of the event. This has been done to attract the audience to what the actual event was then after this they can have a closer look at the even information. A continuous gradient travels around the design, highlighting it quite boldly so that when the type animation has been complete, there is still something happening on the design to intrigue the audience. Also, a small piece of type spins round in a circle at the top to aid this idea. All the information included is completely necessary to the event and has been carefully set to make sure the design is still legible, even during the colour change.

Then, using the software on Artivive, I managed to link the animation up with a non moving image meaning that when I printed it out it would animate through the app. Here is a few examples of it being animated through the app. It has worked perfectly with the printed out version of the flyer and there is no delay between the app and physical print. I am happy with how this has turned out so far as I have clearly managed to link both print and digital design within a multi format system.

After some feedback on my design, I was made aware that I still had a decent amount of time left to develop this idea into something larger by making a few alterations of this or perhaps doing more branding for this band. I will review my options and see if I can push either the printed version of digital to its full potential.

OUGD501 ARTIVIVE

After my crit I reviewed all of my options of how the practical work could continue. I began by sourcing an article that I could turn into a printed publication with digital aspects. I found this one on Its Nice That about how people consume most information digitally now and how this designer, Steve Hockett, has tailored his printed media to a digital format. He has done this by including animations and interactive elements. I thought that I could perhaps take this article and transform it into my ideal publication however, that would require using his work which wouldn't work ethically. I also think the work load wouldn't be great enough for that brief.

After reading this article I finally noticed that I should also create something just like these animated posters. These posters translate information on a strictly digital only format, but could also be used in print minus the animated aspect. After some research into printed matter and animations I found this app called Artivive which uses artificial intelligence to animated printed matter on your mobile device. This effect makes it seem like the thing you're looking at is moving but it's actually staying still, bridging the gap between printed media and digital.

I have finally decided that my physical work will be a poster or flyer that will be a fully functional gif through the use of this app and also a piece of top quality printed work. I will find an event which will be the content of my work and see if I am able to translate the information of it clearly using print and digital.
