Initial Ideas Membership Card

Initial Ideas Membership Card

My final idea for the membership card has been refined to its final form which is to lino print peoples initials to the card when purchased. The post printed card will have a very simple and minimalist  design with a simple but of type and maybe an illustration.

My first idea was to have a line drawing of quite a stereotypical strong man. The kind of man you could expect to see in a pub like this. Originally I wanted to letterpress the name of the member on the card and that would fir on the line below the illustration. Now by changing my idea and lino printing large initials in colour I feel like it would give the card more character and style. Contrasting these too styles seems more appealing then just having the whole card very simple.

Here is a distort illustration of a dog with the title of the pub simply placed below it. Even though the illustration is unclear you can still tell what it is. Having it nice and small too really contrasts against what it would look like after the print. I felt like this illustration might be a bit distracting to the eye when the card has been printed on however. So maybe by either increasing the size of simplifying the detail it could become more suitable.

After several experiments with size and line thickness, I have decided to fully strip the illustration down to the bare minimum. I found that these previous designs were way too distracting when imaging what they would look like after the print. Now I have done an incredibly simple silhouette line drawing of a dogs head. I feel like this compliments the type perfectly especially by deciding to have them both the same weight. This is better then the previous ideas as it would be less distracting when viewing the print. I feel like this would even compliment the print as a hole.

Brief Crit

Brief Crit

Today I had a crit where my letterpress brief was reviewed. I had to change the idea slightly however because I couldn't get inducted in the letterpress printing method. I stated this in the crit and was informed with a few other things I could possibly print with. One was to use lino and just print the initial of the member in large on the membership card. The other was to laser cut large initials on blocks and use them as stamps which would be similar to the lino idea. I think I might chose lino however because the brief is all about hand made print techniques and using a laser cutter might be cheating to a certain extent.

Letterpress Brief

Letterpress Brief

I have decided once more to change my mind on the practical aspect of this project. Originally I was going to use a screen printed poster in my design, but I thought that maybe letterpress was more relevant in the world of graphic design and advertising. I will have to re-write my brief so it accommodates my letterpress idea and hope this is a smart decision.

The Brief:

Using hand-made print technique to personalise membership cards

This brief aims to use the letterpress format to personalise membership cards for an independent pub in the city called 'Hair of the Dog'. They want a membership card that is unique to each and every customer so they can feel apart of the pubs community. This membership card must have some form of hand-made print on that would be printed upon whenever a customer claims a membership card. This card would be kept by them to claim their deals and discounts at the pub. Must take into consideration the material of the card and also if its design matches the aesthetic of an independent pub in the city.

Must deliver a series of personalised membership cards, to show how each card could be made individual to different customers.

Must have used a hand-made print technique to produce part of this publication.
